Chapter 15

Lena

L didn’t leave Grace a response in the morning, actually, but that was because L was stuck in the absolute worst form of beautiful lesbian torture possible.

I hadn’t been expecting to just get an invitation to come see Grace when I went and asked at the diner if anyone had heard from her. And I certainly hadn’t expected Grace to be naked in the tub for the invitation. Let alone getting me naked with her and holding me tight and telling me she liked me.

Did straight girls do that? And if so… why?

We had supper together after I’d had to suffer through the absolute heart-wrenching experience that was Grace washing my hair, her long and slender fingers massaging my scalp and shutting off my brain, leaving the bathroom together once we were both dressed.

I felt guilty for enjoying it. But… well… I was enjoying it.

Sure enough, Sally’s signature roast chicken was delicious, and sitting with Sally and her boyfriend Hector, who had their son Randy on his knee eating chicken with them, everyone talking and laughing like I was just part of the family and Grace had been for some time now, and then Grace seriously went and asked me if I could stay the night with her, too.

“I’ve never had so much fun,” she said, once we were sitting in her bedroom after. “I know I have to go back before long, but… I’d like to stay with you for as long as it lasts.”

I blinked. “Um—yeah. Yeah, that sounds—I mean—of course. I’ll have to ask Sally…”

She waved me off. “Sally already told me I should invite you to stay the night. She says you can just stay in the guest bedroom with me.”

Ah. Right. The guest bedroom. With its one bed. “Oh. Yeah. That’s—yeah. Totally. That sounds great. I mean, I can grab a blanket and take the floor, I wouldn’t want to—”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” she said, sinking back into the bed. “We can share the bed. We’re both girls, there’s nothing awkward about it.”

I wanted to scream that there was everything awkward about it. But—I did not.

And of course, I didn’t know how to say no. And it wasn’t like I wanted to say no to sleeping next to a beautiful woman. So, somehow or other, I ended up in a pair of Hector’s pajamas he’d loaned me, texted Cara to say I was having a sleepover with a friend, and then I lay in bed next to Grace Ashton, the most beautiful human being ever.

She shifted closer to me and dropped her voice to a whisper. “Look how clear it is tonight.”

It took a second for my gay-meltdown brain to even piece together what she’d said. She gestured towards the window, the sky above so clear you could see so many more stars than you’d think were out there. “It… it is. It’s so beautiful.”

“Yeah.” She nestled closer to me. My brain went staticky. “I always loved the stars,” she said, her voice sweet, but with a wistful longing in it.
